In the summer of
1996, three families had a burden for planting a new work church in
Lawton. John Peck, Ronnie & Laquita Shaw, Rick & Janie Lowe began
seeking God’s direction for this vision. Dayspring Community Church
held its first worship service on February 2, 1997 in John’s living
room.
The vision for
this young church was to be used by God to present the gospel of
Christ in a contemporary and relevant way. The church relocated to Baptist Student Union
building near Cameron University and prepared to call its first
pastor.
Chris Stephens
was called to serve as a part-time pastor in August of 1998. Chris
and Nikki commuted to Lawton from Fort Worth, Texas each week while
he completed his studies at Southwestern Baptist Theological
Seminary. He became Dayspring’s first full time pastor in May of
1999.
Since that time
God has continued to bless the Dayspring family with continued
growth. The church later met for a time on racquetball courts at
the Center of Good Health and in the gymnasium at the Lawton
Christian School. Several other new work churches have been started
because of the influence and assistance of Dayspring.
The church
purchased 20 acres of land located at
8612 NW Cache Road in Lawton and the construction of the first
building was completed in May of 2005.
